Whilst Cape Produce Company exports limited quantities of its hides wetsalted; the majority of hides purchased are used for our own wetblue plant within the tannery.
Current capacity in the wetblue plant is 162,000t per day (approx 5500 hides); with construction in progress to increase to 200,000t per day (approx 6600 hides)
Wet blue selections are independent of the source that hides originate from. Each hide is individually graded on its own merit and placed into the relevant selection. Wet blue selections are kept extremely simple to ensure consistency for our customers:
These hides are suitable for the premium Automotive, Shoe Upper and Upholstery industries.
The hides can have minor defects which include light/healed scratches.
These hides are suitable for any corrected grain material.
South African hides have the following general characteristics:
95% of hides are Ox/Heifer
1/2 small brands on approx. 50% of hides
Small hump on approx. 10% of larger animals only
No grubs

Note: 3rd Grade, Excessive Flay and Reject hides are removed from all selections and marketed separately.
Any of the wetblue hide selections can also be split to a customer’s specific substance requirements
